Schalke €30m-rated defender linked with surprise move to Liverpool
Liverpool are still ‘seriously thinking’ about signing Ozan Kabak in winter. Liverpool have linked with Schalke player several times recently, following Virgil van Dijk’s likely season-ending injury. Reds coach is only left with Joel Matip and Joe Gomez as out-and-out established central defensive options, with Fabinho also able to fill in there.
It is noted that Turkey international could be allowed to leave Bundesliga giants in winter for a cut-price amount of €25m, due to the German club’s current financial issues. AC Milan are also seen as a strong contender sign Ozan, but the Merseyside giants appear to be right in the mix, too.
Although Liverpool have done well without Virgil Van Dijk so far, winning five and drawing one of their six matches, there is still a need to bring in an additional defender. Joel Matip’s injury problems are well-known, while Fabinho is currently sidelined and has had fitness issues in the past.
The Turkish centre-back would be the perfect addition in many ways, considering he is still just 20, and therefore wouldn’t expect to be playing every week. The 20-year-old defender is also more experienced than Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams, already playing 44 Bundesliga games and winning four caps for Turkey.
Milan chief Frederic Massara has been in contact with Ozan’s entourage with the Miners experiencing a “moment of profound economic crisis”. The Covid-19 pandemic has hit Schalke 04 hard. They are also next to bottom in the Bundesliga and they are understood to be ready to sell some of their footballers to get back on an even keel.
