Man Utd eyeing move for 6 ft 4 Serie A defender

Manchester United and Chelsea hope to exploit the Serie A giants Juventus’ financial problems in the summer transfer window by landing Matthijs De Ligt for a bargain sum.

The Netherlands international chose Turin over Manchester and Barcelona in 2019 when he quit Ajax for La Vecchia Signora in a deal worth £74 million.

The 22-year-old star was seen as a key component of I Bianconeri’s move to become a European giant once more, with the club signing the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Cristiano Ronaldo in consecutive summers.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic has thrown the Italian outfit’s finances into disarray, with Juventus struggling to deal with the bloated wage bill.

They are currently outside the top four and will be forced to cash in on a number of their prized possessions if they fail to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

While official contact is yet to be made, a host of elite clubs – including the Red Devils and the Blues – are keeping an eye on Matthijs’ current situation, according to Eurosport.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have doubts over the futures of Thiago Silva, Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger, meaning Thomas Tuchel is interested in reinforcing at centre-half this summer.

The Red Devils have Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire but they have never dropped their interest in the Dutchman and he’s open to playing in England.
