Man Utd defender set to leave from club in January

Manchester United centre-half Teden Mengi is likely to quit the club on loan when the January transfer market opens.

The highly-rated defender spent the second half of last campaign out on loan with the Championship side Derby County.

Mengi has been a regular captain for the Red Devils’ Under-23 side this campaign with his manager Neil Wood expecting the player to leave on a temporary basis next year.

‘I’m not sure if the chance was there for him to go out on loan [in the summer] or not,’ Neil said.

‘But it is one of them where he spent pre-season with the first-team, he didn’t end up going out on loan and he’s come to pick up game time with us.

‘I think for him it is just important he keeps getting game time, he keeps himself fresh and by January his pathway might change. He might end up going out on loan which I think would probably be the case.

‘It is important he gets his confidence, he gets himself playing right and he is making himself looking a good player like he has done with the U23s.’

He made nine appearances for Wayne Rooney’s side last season and was back on their transfer radar this summer only for the reported deal to fall through.

The player featured heavily under boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during pre-season and trained with the country’s senior side during October’s international break.
