Liverpool tried to Marseille defender last month

Marseille centre-back Duje Caleta-Car has revealed that he turned down an offer to move to Premier League giants Liverpool in the January transfer window.

The Merseyside Reds left it late to bring in defensive reinforcements last month, however, they eventually secured the services of  Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak on the deadly day of the transfer window.

At a time when Jurgen Klopp will likely have to cope without Dutch centre-back Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez for the rest of the season, Caleta-Car has revealed that the Premier League defending champions approached him, however, he elected to remain with Marseille.

Speaking to reporters ahead of Wednesday’s Ligue 1 clash with Nice, the Croatia international said: “Today, there is the Champions League, and I am going to watch the two games, I received an offer from Liverpool.

“It was an honour for me to know that such a club wanted me. We decided with the club that I was going to stay. Marseille is also a great club and I still have a lot of improving to do here.”

Caleta-Car has found back of the net twice in 21 top-flight Ligue 1 games for Les Olympiens this season, and he could shake off an injury in time to face Nice on Wednesday.
