Liverpool told to make approach for Southampton key man
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have been encouraged to raid Southampton again and snap up defender Jannik Vestergaard by Martin Keown.
The Reds are no strangers to landing players from the south-coast club with a host of players heading north over the years.
Sadio Mane, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne, Virgil van Dijk and Adam Lallana have all arrived at Liverpool from Saints in recent years.
And pundit Keown says Liverpool’s German tactician could do a lot worse than bringing 28-year-old Vestergaard to the club.
“I was looking at Vestergaard playing for Southampton, and I will say this on record. I have not seen a better central defender this season, and I looked at his contract situation.
“I am not trying to cause a problem for Southampton, and I thought that maybe that would be a player that Jurgen Klopp would go after. He has been brilliant this season.” Martin told talkSPORT.
Southampton have had a wonderful season to date and Jannik has been a huge player in that.
They sit sixth in the table and have conceded just 19 goals in 17 matches with Vestergaard a huge presence in the defence.
But one problem the Merseyside giants will have over a deal is that the toering Denmark international is currently injured.
The former Werder Bremen and Gladbach player has missed the last three matches with a knee problem and it’s unlikely Jurgen would go for another centre-half who is injured.
He already has Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and van Dijk missing from his team due to injury.
Jannik is out of contract in June 2022, and so would be ripe for plucking from the Saints, but his knee problem makes any deal unlikely.
