Liverpool plotting £8m move for 26-year-old Portuguese defender

Liverpool are allegedly plotting an £8 million transfer move for Olympiakos centre-back Ruben Semedo in an attempt to ease their defensive injury crisis.

Jurgen Klopp looks certain to have to land a defender in the January transfer window, with Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk both out long term.

The double blow leaves the Cameronian Joel Matip as Liverpool’s only senior centre-back – while stand-in centre-half Fabinho is recovering from a hamstring injury ahead of next Sunday’s PL clash against Leicester.

And as the Anfield outfit boss seeks out a defender signing, Semedo is the latest name on his shopping list, according to a report from the 26-year-old central defender’s native Portugal.

Portuguese TV network Sic Noticias has stated Liverpool are prepared to offer him a five-year contract in a bid to shore up their depleted rearguard.

Ruben, who can also play as a holding midfielder, is said to be on a shortlist of targets including Bayern Munich star David Alaba, Ozan Kabak of Schalke and Brighton’s Ben White.

Twice-capped by Portugal, Ruben played for Sporting Lisbon and Villarreal before signing for Greek side Olympiakos in the previous year’s summer.

Liverpool have also been heavily mentioned with Alaba, and the Austria international is reportedly considering an Anfield move as his next potential destination after his current deal with Bayern expires next summer.

But Tuttosportclaims Andrea Pirlo’s Juventus have emerged as favourites to secure the services of the defender, as they view the long-serving Die Roten player as an ideal replacement for veteran defender Giorgio Chiellini.
