Liverpool leading race for Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara
Thiago Alcantara has been given additional time off by the Bavarians and the next few days will be key in deciding his future. Spain international could yet move to Anfield if Georginio Wijnaldum leaves Liverpool for the Catalan giants, where Ronald Koeman is keen to bring him in.
Alcantara previously insisted that he had never publicly declared his desire to leave Allianz Stadium but his house is up for sale and he has said goodbyes to partners. Bundesliga giants have ‘afforded Thiago the next few days off’ to rest and get his affairs in order following the UEFA Nations League matches.
The next few days are crucial, with Bavarians still holding out for £27m. Spaniard played all 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw with Germany and then the 4-0 win over Ukraine on Monday evening. Thiago has been of long-term interest for Liverpool boss but Reds must sell to buy and much will depend on whether a Blaugrana deal with Gini can be agreed.
The Netherlands international is a favourite of the Dutch manager’s having worked together with the national side and he has only one year left of his deal at Liverpool. Another factor under consideration is the Blaugrana’s interest in the 29-year-old midfielder themselves.
A return for their ex-footballers is not out of the question, with several the board keener to see him back at Barcelona ahead of Gini. There are some board members understanding of the Dutch manager’s desire to get in the footballer he knows well and the next week is likely to prove decisive in the transfer plans of both teams.
