Liverpool key man on the brink to sign for Italian giants
Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has allegedly agreed, in principle, a deal to sign for Serie A side Inter at the end of the campaign.
According to Claudio Raimondi of SportMediaset, the Dutchman has a “handshake” with the Nerazzurri and they decided that the Reds man will join them on a free transfer in the summer transfer market.
Wijnaldum is out of contract at Liverpool in July and the Italians are free to speak to him and agree on a formal deal, which will become official before the start of the 2021/22 season.
It seemingly ends any hope left of the Netherlands international extending his contract at the club and remaining on Merseyside, which is not good for the club given that he has still been a key part of the squad for manager Jurgen Klopp this season.
He has been a regular in the midfield in spite of the uncertainty over his long-term future and been a dependable figure during a campaign of injury woes and frustrating results.
Georginio will leave behind some lovely memories for Liverpool supporters after his many years of service.
Perhaps the player’s most famous moment in a red shirt came when he scored twice to help Liverpool produce a thrilling comeback to beat Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals two years ago.
Wijnaldum signed for the Premier League giants from Newcastle United for an initial fee of £23 million in the summer transfer market of 2016.
Since then the Feyenoord academy graduate helped the club win a Premier League and UEFA Champions League trophy and has made 222 appearances across all competitions to date, netting 22 and assisting 16 in that time.
