Liverpool in the hunt to sign Fiorentina in-demand defender
Liverpool have reportedly emerged as surprise contenders in the hunt to sign Nikola Milenkovic from Fiorentina.
The Serbian is one of the most promising centre-halves in Serie A. At the age of 23, Nikola already has bundles of experience.
European papers reported that Manchester United and Manchester City were set to lock horns for Milenkovic’s signature.
However, since then, another PL suitor has emerged. According to a report by FiorentinaNews, the Reds have joined rivals in the “front row” for Nikola.
The defender is out of contract in June 2022, which means Milenkovic is likely to move this summer. If La Viola cannot convince him to extend his deal, they may have to cash in on him.
That could prompt a transfer battle this summer, as Nikola will have no shortage of potential buyers.
Liverpool are now understood to be among them. In spite of signing Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak in January, the club could be on the lookout for additional reinforcements at the back.
Ozan is only on loan at the club from Schalke. The Reds have an option to buy him, but if they don’t activate it, they may seek other players.
It seems unlikely that they’d need an extra defender if Ozan stays. However, the chance to sign Milenkovic for a reduced sum may prove tempting.
What’s more, the towering central defender is able to play as a right-back too, so could cover two positions.
The Serbia international has more than 100 appearances for his side to his name. Milenkovic also has 26 caps for his country.
