Liverpool in pole position to sign RB Leipzig defender

Liverpool have reportedly moved ahead of arch rivals Man United in the race to secure services of RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano next summer.

The highly-rated Frenchman was strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford during the next summer transfer window, however, the Red Devils ultimately put their interest on hold to focus on other targets.

The 21-year-old defender has a release clause in his current deal at RB Leipzig which will allow him to depart from the club for around £40m next summer, prompting a clamour for his services between some of Europe’s top clubs.

Liverpool and Man Utd had been leading the race, however, Spanish outlet Todofichajes reports that the Premier League defending champions have now moved to the front of the queue.

Both teams have already managed to concede 11 goals in this campaigns Premier League, with their defensive requirements being exposed as the Red Devils shipped six goals and Liverpool seven last time out.

Upamecano has emerged as one of the most coveted centre-backs in Europe and he is widely expected to depart from the German outfit next year, despite only agreed on a five-year contract with Leipzig in July.

However, reports have claimed that he will only consider joining a Champions League team.
