Former Man Utd boss backed Henderson to replace De Gea
Jose Mourinho has claimed that 24-year-old Englishman Dean Henderson should be Manchester United’s No.1 choice keeper ahead of David de Gea.
Henderson managed to kept 13 clean sheets in his 26 games across all competitions this campaign, however, only managed to feature 13 times for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s club in the English top-tier.
In comparison, first-choice stopper De Gea only managed 12 clean sheets in his 36 games in all competitions, and his future at Old Trafford recently has been up in the air.
Speaking to The Times, ex-Man United head-coach Mourinho was full of praise for Henderson: “I think they are good goalkeepers. I don’t think they are phenomenal goalkeepers or, in Dean Henderson’s case, not yet phenomenal.
“When I say not yet, I say he will be. I met him at [Manchester] United when he was a kid and I always remember him asking me to go on loan. He was saying when I come back, I come back to be the number one.
“He told me that when he was the fourth choice. He is a kid with an incredible self confidence and I think he is ready.”
Henderson is in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man England team for the Euros in the summer and will be competing with Jordan Pickford and Sam Johnstone for the No.1 spot for the national team.
