Chelsea set to make approach for South American No.5 defender
Chelsea were allegedly prepared to make an £85 million offer for the signature of Paris Saint-Germain centre-half Marquinhos this summer’s transfer window.
The Brazilan star has continued to flourish in France since the German manager Thomas Tuchel’s departure and was handed the captain’s armband when veteran central defender Thiago Silva left for Chelsea.
Marquinhos renewed his deal with Les Parisiens until June 2024 just last year, but Tuchel was supposedly interested in reuniting with his former player in the English capital for the 2021-22 campaign.
According to a recent report from a French TV channel RMC Sport, Chelsea were ready to fork out £85 million to secure the former Roma youngster’s services, with the Blues frustrated in their well-known pursuit of Sevilla and France defender Jules Kounde.
However, the report adds that the South American star remains happy in Paris, and neither he nor the club would have accepted the reported offer from the UEFA Champions League winners.
The 27-year-old versatile defender – a Copa America winner with his nation this summer – boasts 31 goals from 327 matches in a Paris Saint-Germain shirt, claiming six Ligue 1 titles since his arrival from the Serie A outfit back in 2013.
