Chelsea missed out chance to sign French No.2 defender

Chelsea were briefly mentioned with Strasbourg youngster Mohamed Simakan in the January transfer market, although the links never appeared to be all that real in the first place.

And that short January saga appears to be closed now, with several reports claiming that Nagelsmann’s RB Leipzig have agreed on a summer transfer for the central defender.

Die Roten Bullen had been at the forefront of the transfer all along, in spite of interest from the likes of the Blues and AC Milan (who went on to land Chelsea’s Fikayo Tomori on loan instead).

And they will now get the player for €15m or thereabouts, with the deal signing due next week pending a medical examination.

The 20-year-old ace has made 44 appearances in total for his current side in all competitions and is considered as one of the best young defenders in Europe. Mohamed is currently out with an injury but should return in March.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick has responded to rumours mentioning Niklas Sule with a move to Chelsea.

The defender was linked with the Blues this week as new head coach Thomas Tuchel is thought to be a big fan.

The Blues see the Germany international as a long term replacement for veteran Thiago Silva in defence.

When quizzed about the Blues rumours in a press conference, Hansi said: “It is of course nice for us when other clubs are interested in our players.

“At the moment, the defence is doing very well and Niklas is definitely an option, both in central defence and as a full-back.

“I’m very happy with his development. He has a contract with us until 2022. We will see how it develops, how and where he sees his future.”
