Chelsea continue chase for Malmo defender

The English manager is planning to make a move to sign Malmo centre-back Anel Ahmedhodzic, who could join the club as a cheaper alternative to Declan Rice, according to reports in Sweden. The Blues are still on the battle for more defensive reinforcements, despite their £250m spending spree this summer.

The London giants spent the majority of their transfer funds on attackers this summer while bringing in Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr on free deals. They also brought in Ben Chilwell for £50m and shot-stopper Edouard Mendy for a fee in the region of £22m.

Despite their significant transfer outlay, they failed to sign England international, who was one of Frank Lampard’s top targets. The 21-year-old midfielder, who usually plays in the middle of midfield, was watched by the Blues this summer and was expected to move across London.

However, West Ham United kept to their £73m valuation, and that ultimately proved to be a fee too heavy for Chelsea. Blues had been tipped to make a move either in winter or next summer, but could now look elsewhere. Chelsea are exploring making a move to sign Bosnia international.

The Bosnian centre-back still has three years remaining on his contract at Malmo, and it has been suggested that he could go out on loan if he joins the PL side. The 19-year-old defender had a brief stint in England earlier in his career as he spent three years at Nottingham Forest, but only managed one league appearance there.

The Bosnian defender then returned to Malmo, having come through the academy there. Ahmedhodzic is the crucial figure for Malmo and has fantastic form saw him earn a call-up to the Sweden national side earlier this year.
