Chelsea considered transfer of AC Milan key man this summer

Chelsea considered a summer move for AC Milan stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma before to Edouard Mendy’s arrival, according to Fabrizio Romano reports.

The West London club found themselves in dire need of a new stopper following the downturn in form of Spanish stopper, Kepa Arrizabalaga, who lost his place to former Man City star Willy Caballero towards the tail end of last campaign.

Edouard Mendy was recruited from Ligue 1 outfits, Rennes, with the Senegalese international starting the Blues last two marches before the current international break.

Mendy looks sure to be Frank Lampard’s No.1 choice keeper going forward, however, he wasn’t the only option considered by the West London club as they looked to secure a long-term replacement for Kepa who has struggled since his arrival from Atheltic Bilbao.

Fabrizio Romano writes for Calciomercato that the Blues sniffed around Italy international stopper, Donnarumma of Serie A giants, AC Milan over the summer, with the Italian’s deal set to end in the summer of 2021.

However, the feeling at the San Siro is that the youngster will put pen on a new deal with the Rossoneri, the team who gave him the opportunity to play regular first-team football in such a young age.

Chelsea will need to wait and see how Mendy manages to replace Kepa and then consider whether to renew interest in Donnarumma or not.
