Barcelona are close to signing Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum
Gini Wijnaldum ‘is increasingly likely’ to leave Merseyside club and reunite with ex-Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman at Camp Nou. The Netherlands international has played a crucial part in Liverpool manager’s revolution at Merseyside club, infrequently missing a match as Reds won the UCL and PL.
The Dutch manager is looking to inspire his own revolution and knows all about Gini having built a heavy rapport with him during his time working as his international coach. Blaugrana are ‘confident of signing Ronald’s primary target’.
The report states that while the Reds have yet to receive contact from the Catalan club ‘that is expected to change’. The 29-year-old midfielder is into the final year of his deal at Liverpool and is open to a move to the Catalan club, though there has been no sign from him that he is unsettled at Anfield.
Blaugrana have already signed Miralem Pjanic but are seeking further players in midfield as they begin the process of rebuilding in the wake of their UCL calamity. Reds meanwhile are interested in signing Bavarians playmaker Thiago Alcantara but are reluctant to pay the German club’s asking price of £30m.
The Dutch midfielder joined the Reds from Magpies in 2016 and has played 187 games for Liverpool. However, Wijnaldum has yet to be offered a new contract and there is a possibility that he could depart before the closure of the transfer window as the Merseyside club are reluctant to lose him on a free transfer at the end of his deal.
